Preparation of Sample

  1. Oven dry the soil sample between 75 ºC and 80 ºC.
  2. Sieve the sample using a 2 mm mesh sieve, crush particles other than stone to pass through the sieve.
  3. Divide this material to obtain a representative sample of around 60 grams.
  4. Place this sample in a porcelain mortar and grind using a pestle until the material passes through a 0.425 mm sieve.
  5. Oven dry the soil sample between 75 ºC and 80 ºC and store in a dessicator to cool.
  6. Weight out approximately 50 grams of this material, noting its weight to two decimal places.
  7. Pour this sample into a shaker bottle, add 100 ml of distilled water and stopper tightly.
  8. Place the bottle on the bottle roller and run the machine for 16 hours.
  9. Filter the soil suspension into a clean dry flask through a suitable filter papaer ( e.g. Whatman No .5) on the Buchner funnel.
  10. Using a pipette, draw off 25ml of this solution and place in a suitable beaker.
  11. Add distilled water to the beaker to make up to 100ml.
