4. Means of Escape

Providing means of escape in a building is to ensure safe evacuation of all occupants in case of fire. The escape routes should be :-

  • available from all parts
  • remain safe and effective for the duration for which they are needed
  • clearly visible to all users
  • strategically located and adequately sized to meet the needs of all occupants
  • Studies on means of escape showed that the flow rates varied between 79 - 107 persons / minute / metre width under various situations.
