5. Fire Growth Control

Provisions against fire growth is to ensure that the chance of a fire occuring in a building is reduced and if it does occur its rate of growth and spread shall be controlled to permit evaculation and to allow fire control.

Fire growth rate depends on the fire load. Typical values of fire loads according to the type of occupancy is as follow :-
Type of occupancy Fire load (MJ / m2)
School, hotels, hospitals, <= 500
offices, shops, houses, 501 to 1000
factories and storage 1000 to >2000
Places with high fire load need to be given special attention in the prevention of fire. For example, there should be strictly and adjacent to inflammable materials.
