10 : Interviews
The day before

Go through all the correspondence with the company, study your copy of the job application and the material you collected on the company's operations. Prepare your questions. Consider your appearance. Again the watchword is professional-clean, tidy and well turned out. Your shoes may be old but they should be clean!

On the day

  • Arrive about 15-20 minutes before the stated time, to give you chance to use the cloakroom.
  • when you are met by the personnel officer/secretary, get the name of the principal interviewer and his position in the company.
  • when you go in the intervuew room, keep calm and cool.
  • smile and greet the interviewer and shake hands if this is expected.
  • Sit when invited, sit still and look alert.
The interview
  • listening carefully to the opening remarks, make eye contact, and study the body language.
  • concentrate on your strengths when the opportunity occurs.
  • use humour if you feel it is appropriate, but beware- they may not have sense of humour!
  • remember that the interview is yur opportunity to show yourself at your best ( and that does not mean showing off)
  • do your bit towards keeping the dialogue going.
  • silence may be another ploy, in which case, ask an appropriate question from the list you have prepared. If you are the last candidate in a full day , they may be very grateful as the silence could jsut be interview fatigue.
